TASK 2: HORIZONTAL CITIES OR VERTICAL ONES

Some people think that it is best to live in a horizontal city while others think of a vertical city. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People have different views about whether it is better to live in a vertical city or a horizontal one. While there are several benefits to citizens who live in high-rise buildings, I would argue that the idea of living in a city which consists low-rise construction is much more attractive.

On the one hand, there are some reasons why people prefer a vertical city. A city with skyscrapers and tower blocks can have more space for public usage because there will be fewer residential areas due to the fact that most of inhabitants are living in high buildings. Thereby, governments can be able to build more schools, hospitals, or other recreation areas. Secondly, it is more convenient for residents to live in high-rise apartments because they are offered a wide range of goods and services. They can go shopping without traveling so far thanks to shopping malls, amusement and dining areas on other lower floors.

However, I still believe that living in a horizontal city is a better choice. Firstly, people who have a private house can save a large amount of money because they do not have to pay some building services such as parking lot. Furthermore, living lower to the ground is safer when emergencies occur. A striking example for this is an earthquake. People tend to escape more quickly and safely from dangerous places if they live in one-story houses. Having a yard or garden is another benefits for homeowners. It means that they can enjoy their hobbies such as gardening or having outdoor barbecue, which is good for their mental health.

In conclusion, while it can be beneficial to live in a vertical city, it seems to me that the best choice is living in a horizontal city. (292 words)
