TASK 1: LINE CHART - UNEMPLOYMENT RATES IN THE US AND JAPAN

The graph shows the unemployment rates in the US and Japan between March 1993 and March 1999.

The line graph compares the percentages of unemployment in the US and Japan from March 1993 to March 1999.

Overall, there was a decrease in the rate of unemployment in the US, whereas the percentage of work force in Japan rose steadily over the 6-year period. Although the unemployment rate in the US was higher than that in Japan in most years, the proportions of unemployment in both nations were quite similar by March 1999.

Between March 1993 and March 1995, the percentage of work force in the US experienced a decrease to 5.5% despite some fluctuations. Unfortunately, the proportion of Japanese people being out of job increased steadily to around 3.8% in March 1994. The figure remained almost stable before increasing to 4.4% in 1997. By contrast, over the same period, America’s unemployment rate continued to drop slightly, at 5.3%.

Nevertheless, the last figures of both countries turned out to be extremely close. In March 1999, the rates of unemployment in the USA and Japan stood still at about 5.1% and 4.9% respectively. It means that the highest figure in the US was slightly equal with the lowest one in Japan. (192 words)
