TASK 2: THE MEDIA

The media pay too much attention to the lives and relationships of celebrities such as actors, singers or footballers. They should spend more time reporting the lives of ordinary people instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

These days, it is true that the private lives of renowned figures have received widespread coverage in the mass media, such as sensational love affairs, glamorous lifestyles, and short marriages. I agree that the press has spent too much time on prying into the lives of celebrities, and the ordinary people in our society should be given more attention instead.

To begin, celebrity news is being seen as a major source of income that brings huge profits for many media companies. Otherwise, reporting about celebrity gossip is considered to be more entertaining than informative for the readers. The media have a tendency to focus on the scandals of some famous people rather than on their real accomplishments. Paris Hilton, for instance, has well-known as a party girl who loves wasting money, using drugs, and alcohol. Her reputation is not based on any achievements but as a hotel heiress. Thus, the media have brought a bad role model for the youth to look up to.

Instead of detailing the lives of famous people in the public eye, the press should concentrate more attention on the masses. Additionally, there has been dozens of extraordinary stories of ordinary people whose lives will inspire and intrigue the communities a lot: from surgeons treating over a hundred people from the mountainous regions unable to pay for the health care, a marine who lost both legs in an Afghanistan explosion rescues a baby from a car crash, to a veteran who has spent more than forty years looking after martyr’s graves, for example.

In conclusion, I firmly hold the opinion that the ordinary people deserve the media attention as much as the celebrities. (276 words)
